Class Outline

Review:                  Attention and how each team is doing.

Demonstrate:       How to teach eye contact,  Demonstrate sit and wait at the entrance with eye contact.

Action 1:     Meet and Greet  the Dogs

• Identify if your dog has any sensitivity to body handling by both a stranger and the family
• Explain counter conditioning
• Instructor will greet your dog and touch their ears, feet and pet them as they are comfortable.

Review:          Ask each team to demonstrate a command as instructed:

•    Sit
•     Down  
•    Wait
•    Stay

ASK:   The difference between Wait and Stay. 

Action 2:    Meet and Greet the Person

•    Practice stays and sits as another person walks by the dog. 
•    Approaches directly, turns away
•    Approaches and speaks to the handler
•    Approaches and asks permission to touch the dog
•    Handler leaves the dog in a stay

Practice:

Work in teams of two.  Ask one person to tether their dog while they "play" the friendly stranger.   While dog is tethered, the handler should not reinforce negative behaviors such as barking.

Loose Leash Walking Assessment:

Have teams demonstrate Loose Leash Walking.  Add direction changes, speed changes, turns.

Homework:

Come prepared to work on the Recall ( Come Command.)  Start a personal assessment of your dog - when do they come?

When don't they come?  What are you doing when the don't come? What are you doing when they do come? Are you calling them to

come for "negatives?"  Does your dog respond positively to their name? If not, why? What can you do differently?

Next week - bring a small notebook ( that you can fit into a pocket ) with a pen or pencil to record your dog's progress.
