Training
Services for the Exceptional Dog.
Deaf
dogs can be wonderful house pets and can be trained to
respond to various methods of sign communication. Deafness
in dogs can be hereditary or congenital or acquired later in
life due to accident or infections or illness. Based on
information from the Tufts'
Canine & Feline Breeding and Genetics Conference
congenital deafness has been reported in over 80 breeds of
dogs.
Another fact is that
many deaf dogs are euthanized in American shelters just because
they are deaf. There are many myths about deaf dogs in
general and especially about the prevalence of aggression.
You can read about these myths and get accurate information about
deaf dogs by visiting the DEAF
Dogs Education Action Fund at www.deafdogs.org.
Blind
or visually impaired dogs can live amazingly normal lives with
the proper knowledge and training of both the owner and the
dog. Household management is key to helping your blind dog
live comfortably. Currently there is only one book on living
with a blind dog, Written by Caroline Levin, RN it is an
exceptional book for blind dog owners.
